Letter from the President
Greetings!
We had a fun time Saturday night at our annual fall celebration. Charles Campbell was voted the Triathlete of the Year. It took quite a bit of work, but we were able to pry the plaque out of Bill Winberg’s hands. Congratulations Charles on all your hard work and enthusiastic volunteer spirit.
I have volunteered to be the President of the Club for 2008. I have been a member of the club for a couple of years. We are a very open and full of friendly people. The sport of triathlon is one of the quickest growing sport segments. In the next year we are going to see some new multi-sport races. In order to success organize and run these events we need to be a more organized club. This will be accomplished by adding new positions to the board. I have personally asked the following folks to join me, and they have accepted:
Race Director Liason: Chris Martin
Chris brings with her an impressive portfolio of experience. As a former race director of Iron Horse she has first hand experience in what the club needs to do to help a race be a success. I envision this position telling the club what we need to do to assist the race director.
Social Chair: Leah Hulcher
Leah has the energy and enthusiasm to put together celebrations that are fun and yet kid friendly. I envision this position organizing social events for club members to get together to socialize. A spring party and a fall party discuss race schedules and celebrate the end of the season. Leah will also be organizing a post Iron Abe celebration.
Training Director: John Gee
John has the organization skills
and the athletic experience to assist newbies in developing
their training plans. John will assist
in getting newbies swim instruction, as needed. He will also organize “bricks” or other
training events for those looking for an opportunity to train. This will promote the sport of triathlon in
Secretary and Treasurer: Patty Shafer
Patty has held the club together with her dedication. Patty will continue to maintain the funds and generate regular reports and meeting minutes. She will also collect membership dues.
Past President: Charles Campbell
Charles will remain on the board on an advisory level and volunteer. Charles is required to bring his “Triathlete of the Year” plaque with him to all events.
President: Steve Smith
The office of president, as I see it, is to serve the club by providing vision and leadership for the club. This includes maintaining our status with USAT.
Membership Director: OPEN
This office is presently open. This position will track paid members and maintain list with email, address and phone numbers. Responsibility of maintaining membership forms and liabilities will also lie here. Until this position is filled I will maintain the duties.
Webmaster: Steve Smith
I will continue to maintain the website unless someone else wants the spot. My geek level is high enough to keep it updated for emailing notices and posting calendars. However, after reviewing other websites, our site has much greater potential. I envision a site where members can post their race schedules and cross reference with others doing the same race.
I am very excited about our group of board members! However, we can do nothing without an active group of club members. We have become a collection of friends. We need members to have a sense of “ownership” in the club. Our present list has members that are either no longer in the sport or have moved away. By requiring a yearly membership fee of $10 we will solve both issues. A mailer will be sent out near the turn of the year with membership application and waiver.
We are also changing the name of the triathlete club, due to the negative connotation that goes with “Ironhorse”. There will be a ballot mailed with your membership application. The names we are looking at are:
Rail Splitters Triathlon Club
Springfield
Triathlon Club (we ruled this out do to number of
